Welcome

by ECB1966 June 28, 2020 No Comments

We are based in West Mainland on the Scottish Island of Orkney off the North coast of Scotland.

With an interest in 3D printing and archaeology it seemed an obvious route to take to try and develop a system of creating physical 3D models from the 3D data that is now being captured at archaeology sites.

We were one of … Read the rest

Tidying up the drawers

by ECB1966 July 18, 2025 No Comments

Trying to bring some order to the kitchen and office drawers we are using the Gridfinity system where you print a grid to fit the draw and then you print boxes or various containers to organize the items you want to put in the draw. It can be rather addictive but a great way to use up those partial used … Read the rest

New scanner arrives

by ECB1966 July 18, 2025 No Comments

A new piece of kit has arrived, this is a blue light and laser scanner. I have been spending quite some time learning the process and the best way to scan with different objects. This photo is of it scanning an Auroch’s horn which is an extinct type of very large cow for the Neolithic period. As it happens the … Read the rest

Extra Printer added to the team.

by ECB1966 September 28, 2024 No Comments

After some 6 plus years of using the Robox and the monster Raise3D Pro2 Plus we have decided to invest in a Bambu X1 carbon multi colour printer.

This machine whilst having a smaller print area than the Raise it does have a lot of up to date features to make printing that bit more automatic and fault free. Not … Read the rest

Roman Horse heads

by ECB1966 February 25, 2021 No Comments

I have been asked to print life size models of some Roman Horse heads that were found at the bottom of the well they are not sure why the horses were killed: could be ritual but could be due to urgent evacuation of the fort ….in essence the cause remains a mystery.

The data came from CT scans and is … Read the rest

Winter Maeshowe Solstice – in a 3D model!

by ECB1966 December 21, 2020 No Comments

Because of COVID we can’t get to see the winter solstice effect at Maeshowe ( clouds permitting as well ) so I thought I would try and copy this with one of the 3D printed models I have of Maeshowe.

It was surprisingly tricky to try and mimic the path of the winter sun, my thanks go to Anna for … Read the rest

Successful Printing with BronzeFill

by ECB1966 December 16, 2020 No Comments

Previously I had a play with ColorFabb’s BronzeFill, this is a filament with 40% bronze and quite heavy. Once printed it is a rather boring dull brown color but it can be sanded and polished like ‘real’ bronze, this takes quite a bit of work but the rewards are worth it ( see picture above). I wanted these prints of … Read the rest

Bronze Age Armlet

by ECB1966 November 4, 2020 No Comments

I have been asked to attempt to print this large Bronze age armlet for the National Museum of Scotland and the Trimontium Trust, the data came from Hugo Anderson-Wymark’s photogrammetry and is visible on SketchFab ( https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/massive-bronze-armlet-stanhope-scotland-bc9dae597b854ab59a4f7d56e7a66aa8 )

They only initially wanted a trial piece in white, but after that was done I thought I would try printing it in … Read the rest

Maeshowe 3D models

by ECB1966 August 25, 2020 No Comments

I have been doing quite a bit of work trying to get a good large model of Maeshowe, in the end I even managed to get the passageway printed so with a torch you can mimic the winter solstice effect within the model.

One of these models was commissioned and the other one was me having a bit of fun.… Read the rest

Buddo model for Stromness Museum

by ECB1966 August 25, 2020 No Comments

Just before the lockdown started I was asked by Stromness Museum if I could 3D print a full sized model of their famous Neolithic artefact ‘Buddo’ found at Skara Brea with a view of perhaps making something for sale although the COVID-19 situation has now put this idea on the back burner.

The model was created from the photogrammetry data… Read the rest
